Default keeping items unidentified

Right now, I have three swords, three bows (short, flat, and long), and an axe that I've kept unidentified. Has anyone taken the time to run (even rough) calculations regarding the efficiency of selling unidentified max gold weapons versus identifying them and gambling on the outcome? It seems like selling un-ID'd items would be the most efficient from a time standpoint because they should sell fairly quickly, but that hitting that perfect shortbow or sword would net more than enough money over the long-term to make up for a lot of "14% vs. hexed" weapons that are salvaged or sold to the merchant. Anyone have hard data or sufficient experience with this to post an opinion?

edit to add: I plan to PvP with my existing characters (and their weapons) for the most part, so unlocking upgrades isn't all that important to me. I've unlocked the upgrades I'd most want for PvP, anyway. My question is purely economically focused.

a few days ago, i found a gold max damage longbow that i kept unidentified...i ran an auction on this site, the highest bid i got was 25k. not really satisfied, i took it to ascalon and lions arch, where i eventually got a bid of 45k....most of the people thought i was lying, how could i get a bid of 45k for an unIDd weapon? well i was telling the truth, i got 45k for it...the guy IDd it, and its worth maybe 5k at max...from now on, i doubt i'll ID any of my gold max weapons

I agree with al. I think most players are risk lovers and would gamble an item if they need it. They simply would dream it to be the greatest thing ever. You can see a holy rod bid there now at 100K. At least the bid till 21K is real, which could hardly be justified by a probability calculation.

I've gotten my fair share of gold wands and rods. I will laugh my arse off if he gets like 15% faster recharge on illusion skills or something. A good bit of them are stuipid like that. It could be like +5 energy>50 though, which is nice.

ye, typically when you see post like "Godly weapon for XX/XX", that is usually something requires one class skills, but the mod completely benefits the other one. Saw a wand last time, like req 10 illusion, FCast blood 15% and FCharge water 18%. lol. hilarious.

Staves are even wild since they can have 8 mods in a useless class --> quick recover from dazed/poison etc etc. Don't gamble gold staves.

I wouldn't gamble with any golds especially wands and staves. I know every gold item i've bought from other players (for salvage mods) I've pretty much gotten wood planks for. I think maybe 1 out of 10 I've gotten the mod. No idea why, but I get screwed alot.

As a different viewpoint to this, I'm identifying all rares I find...especially max damage.

I actually thought about selling unidentified rares a while ago and began stockpiling some (15 in fact). At one point I tried to sell some but it didn't give, people kept offering stuff like 5k for an unid max dragon sword.
Eventually I gave up and identified them all...and when I look back, I'm glad I did.

In the batch I found, 4 of the weapons were 15>50 (3 of them having 8 req), a sword, an axe and two hammers. Out of the others with less desirable damage mods, I found a 3/-1 axe haft, +30 hp axe grip, and 5/-1 vampiric string (all salvaged).

Maybe I just had a stroke of incredible luck, but I would identify any rare that dropped without thinking about it now.

Totally agree with Interregnum. Just id the damn things and be done with it. It's the only way to be sure that your getting what you deserve.
